Daily Grammar Practice for Upper Elementary Students | Teaching Grammar

Are your upper elementary students still struggling to retain grammar concepts? Helping students master grammar works best when they have daily repetition with important concepts. Here you will find grammar activities that provide spiraled grammar practice for your students! These grammar exercises can be printed out or assigned digitally. Either way, your students will soar with an on-going and interesting grammar routine!

What Are Daily Grammar Strips?

Daily Grammar Practice Strips were designed to provide spiraled grammar practice that can be completed daily with 10 minutes or less of learning time each day.

As a veteran upper elementary ELA teacher, I know how frustrating it is when students don’t retain the concepts they’ve practiced so many times.

Especially when it comes to grammar!

Over the years, I noticed something magical happening when we did consistent grammar review: my students made less grammar mistakes in their writing.

That’s when I became a firm believer in the power of spiraled grammar practice.

So each day, we completed short grammar lessons and activities that reinforced things they already learned with grammar.

I took all those grammar standards and activities and designed Daily Grammar Practice Strips.

How Do Daily Grammar Practice Strips Work?

These daily grammar practice pages work as full printables with each day of the week shown. Or they can be cut into strips, which are versatile enough to be used for literacy centers and exit tickets!

Managing your daily grammar work in this way also allows you to use them for:

  • Interactive Notebooks
  • Homework or Classwork Practice
  • Lesson Warm-Ups
  • Morning Work
  • Grammar Review
  • Sub Work

The goal remains the same: make time for on-going, spiraled grammar practice so that students consistently work with past grammar lessons.

Steady exposure to these concepts builds your students confidence to use correct grammar in their daily speech and weekly writing assignments as well.

Simple Ways to Practice Grammar Daily

Throughout the years, my literacy block waspacked with things I needed to cover.

Teaching grammar–even for just 10 minutes–seemed like too much some days.

When you already feel like you have a million things to cover, how do you fit in one more thing?

Well, I learned effective but simple ways to practice grammar each week:

Even though it can feel daunting to fit in another activity, these ideas give you options on how to make it work.

What Grammar Concepts Are Covered?

Several different ELA skills show up throughout this grammar set.

Your students get daily repetition with concepts related to

  • all types of verbs
  • possessive nouns
  • homophones and homographs
  • defining vocabulary in context
  • synonyms as well as antonyms
  • capitalization
  • using correct ABC order
  • regular and irregular nouns
  • contractions
  • AND MORE!

Each grammar skill covered spirals back around. This helps students get consistent repetition with all the grammar concepts included. It also provides on-going practice that lasts the full school year.

Here are more details about these grammar printables:

This resource provides a FULL YEAR of ELA skills that your kiddos need to masterr.

Each activity chosen aligns with academic state standards.

PLUS, these printables are FULLY EDITABLE. So teachers and homeschooling parents can make sure each grammar practice fits students’ needs.

What Makes This Different From Weekly Paragraph Editing?

Another favorite activity that I rely on are weekly paragraphs full of grammar mistakes that students must edit, then rewrite correctly.

If you’ve spent time around my blog, you’ve noticed these in other posts when I talk about grammar.

Those paragraphs serve two main purposes:

  • help students connect grammar with writing directly
  • provide longer / bigger chunks of texts for students to edit

What makes them different from these daily strips is the amount of grammar mistakes.

Not only that, but these grammar strips offer isolated ELA skills for students to review instead of revision mistakes within a passage.

Which is why they can be completed in 10 minutes or less!

Each activity challenges students to apply grammar concepts in a different way.

If you’re students need quick, on-going practice, then these daily grammar practice activities are just right for you.

Who Can Use This Printable + Digital Resource?

The ELA concepts covered in this resource are best suited for students in 3rd-6th grade.

I chose multiple grade levels in one because my 4th grade students’ skill level with grammar met more than one grade level.

Providing a range of skills from upper elementary grammar standards helped me to differentiate easier!

Since they can be customized, they also work well with students in any state or country.

Homeschooling parents, private and public school teachers, as well as intervention specialists, can use this resource.

How Can I Teach Grammar Effectively Through Virtual Learning?

Keeping students engaged while teaching online is definitely challenging! Especially when you’re teaching grammar concepts.

The good news is that it’s not impossible. Here are some tips for teaching grammar effectively through virtual learning:

  • Continue to use visuals that reinforce important grammar skills. One simple example is showing color-coded parts of speech. You can do this with an anchor chart or whiteboard behind you OR by sharing your screen and using Jamboard.
  • Choose interactive grammar activities where students drag-and-drop, type, or highlight materials on the screen. An example of this is shown below with the interactive version of these Daily Grammar Practice Stips through Google Slides.
  • Incorporate other digital tools like Kahoot to play grammar games that are fun. This keeps students interested in practicing grammar while learning online.

In addition to the tips above, this post shares detailed ideas for everything you need to teach literacy centers digitally.

The digital and printable versions of the daily grammar activity shown above come together available in one set.
